Food & Beverage Manufacturing in New York

The implementation of New York State’s Food and Beverage hemp regulations has opened new doors for emerging hemp manufacturing companies and partnerships, it has also created an entirely new set of regulatory hurdles for these same operations. This seminar will cover both the emerging opportunities for hemp and CBD manufacturers in the food and beverage sector, and the new regulations that ensure hemp/CBD products are safe and in compliance with state and federal laws. The allowance of hemp infused food and beverage products by New York State was a definitive move that was truly the first of its kind. The vast majority of infused products do not fit into the normalized model of “tinctures and topicals” typically allowed by regulatory bodies. This created multiple issues within the hemp development space; from unregulated food products like the gummies we have all seen advertised, to manufacturer hesitancy to launch potentially revolutionary and lucrative new products. This portion of the seminar will cover the types of products that will be newly allowed by New York State, and what this empowers for new and existing hemp businesses to accomplish. These new regulations, however, do not come without new challenges for manufacturing operations. Much like the early days of the consumer supplement market, hemp products were widely unregulated during their early explosive market growth. The rapid growth, coupled with the lack of regulation, has lead to a market full of products from unknown origins with potential contamination risks to consumers. Many times further analysis of these products also discovers that the cannabinoid content is vastly different than the claims on the label. This lead New York State to implement Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP’s) for all food and beverage hemp products. These regulations are designed to ensure that products are both safely produced and accurately represent the information being presented to the consumer on the label. This section of the seminar will cover some of what cGMP does, as well as the financial, time, and responsibility implications cGMP has on the manufacturing process. With any remaining time the seminar will conclude with a short question and answer period.
